Legal Status of Peptides in Japan (2026)
Research peptides are legal to purchase in Japan for scientific and in-vitro research use. The Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Act (Act No. 145 of 1960) regulates products marketed as pharmaceuticals in Japan. Substances sold strictly for research use — not marketed as drugs, not making therapeutic claims — fall outside the Act's authorisation regime.
The Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) oversees pharmaceutical regulation in Japan. Research peptides such as BPC-157, TB-500, CJC-1295, Ipamorelin, GHK-Cu, Glutathione, and NAD+ are not listed as narcotics or stimulants under the Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Law or the Stimulants Control Law.
PMDA Compliance and Japan Customs
Japan Customs handles import clearance. Research peptides imported from the EU with proper research-use labelling, a Certificate of Analysis, and a commercial invoice clearing the contents as "research chemicals — not for human consumption" pass through Japan Customs when dispatched via DHL Express with full pre-clearance.
Compliance points: - Every pen and carton labelled "for research purposes only" - No therapeutic, medical, or dosing guidance provided - COA from an accredited laboratory included - GMP manufacturing in South Korea — neighbouring country, same ISO standards - Independent HPLC purity verification (>99%)
