Glutathione serves as the central hub of the cellular antioxidant network. It directly neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), regenerates vitamins C and E, and serves as a substrate for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase enzyme families. In immune function, glutathione is essential for lymphocyte proliferation, T-cell activation, and the oxidative burst of neutrophils and macrophages during pathogen clearance.
Glutathione is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant, present in millimolar concentrations in nearly every cell.
